If you think about the most famous game character in the world of Nintendo, Super Mario will come to your mind automatically. Same thing in the good old Sega empire. Yes, now you imagine the cool blue hedgehog named Sonic. But if you think about Android games, which character comes to your mind? The Android Bot? Well, he’s more a mascot for the entire OS, he’s not a pure gaming figure.

As you can see, there is a lack of figureheads, but one man, Sergio Viudes, is fighting against the namelessness. Yes, none other than Sergio Viudes is creating a line of games with a really cute fantasy species named “Baviux”, our little heros of Baviux and Connect 4 Baviux. So please dive into the world of Baviux and listen to their creator, Sergio Viudes.

 

10 Questions for Sergio Viudes


1. Please introduce yourself.

My name is Sergio Viudes Carbonell. I’m a 29 years old computer engineer from Balsares (a small town in Elche, Spain). I work in a software development company, and I develop videogames in my free time.

2. What made you want to be a game developer?

I love videogames, drawing and making music since I was a child (I started playing videogames with my brother’s ZX Spectrum), and I like computer engineering, so developing games is the perfect hobby for me! (I wish someday it will be my job).

I think it’s amazing that now a single developer can develop a game and distribute it over the world. A few years ago it was impossible. But now, thanks to mobile devices and internet, I can develop a game and everyone in the world can play it. It’s awesome! :D

3. What platforms do you develop games for and why?

I develop games for mobile devices because nearly everyone has a mobile device, and thanks to mobile app stores it is easy to distribute a game to all mobile devices in the world. And it’s more fun playing games with a mobile device because you can play it everywhere!

Now I develop only for Android, it’s my favourite mobile platform.

4. What are your experiences in porting games between two platforms?

I never ported a game to another platform.

5. How do you get inspiration for a game?

For my first game, Baviux, I wanted to develop a game that used the accelerometer, I think it‘s a fun feature of mobile devices. One day I remembered those water machines I played as a child, and I thought it could be fun to combine both things.

And for my second game (Connect 4 Baviux), I wanted to develop a puzzle game, and Connect 4 is a game I always liked, so… I combined again two things: Baviux and Connect 4 :D

6. How long does it take for you to write a game from start to finish?

My first game take for me about 4 months, but I only worked on it in my free time. Because it was my first Android development, and I composed the music for it, it took longer for me than the second one.

7. What are the biggest technical challenges when you develop a game?

The biggest technical challenge is the perfomance. I developed my second game testing it on a Samsung Galaxy S2 (a very fast mobile device), so the game ran really well. But when I tested it on older devices, I realized that I needed to rewrite some parts of the code to make my game run faster… but after a bit of hard work, I got it!

8. What do you think the future of gaming will look like?

Mobile devices are the future of gaming. Everyone has a mobile device, and everyone likes playing. For hardcore gamers there will be games with complex graphics and developed by big gaming companies. And for casual games there will be simple games, made by small companies or single developers.

9. What is your favourite game at the moment and why?

With my console now I’m playing “Street Fighter IV” because “Street Fighter II” was one of my favourite games, and now with 3D graphics and online playing it’s awesome. And I’m playing “Gran Turismo 5″ too, I always loved racing simulators!

10. What is your advice for new developers?

Developing games is really fun! And now it is a good time for it, because you can distribute your game over the world with mobile app stores. And…. who knows? Maybe your game will be the next Angry Birds!
