10 Questions for Syrmtech
Hello everybody, we are a small, three-man development team. Two programmers and one artist. Our names are Nikola, Tavor and Sasa and we all know each other from university in Vukovar, Croatia. After university we began working together developing business software. That became very boring so here we are.
2. What made you want to be a game developer?
The main reason why we decided to step into the game programming is that it’s much more fun then business software development.
And, since we all like gaming, we simply combined pleasure and business.
3. What platforms do you develop games for and why?
Currently, we develop games for Android. It has big share in mobile OS platforms, which means that one can distribute it’s application to a large number of users.
4. What are your experiences in porting games between two platforms?
We don’t have any experience in porting games between platforms but we plan to port our game to iOS and Windows phone in near future.
5. How do you get inspiration for a game?
Inspiration comes to us in bits and pieces and final idea is born from collaboration between us and refinement of those bits and pieces.
6. How long does it take for you to write a game from start to finish?
About 4 months (4 to 5 hours a day on average) for a game like Syrmia Tower Defence.
7. What are the biggest technical challenges when you develop a game?
When you design a game, you have to implement highly efficient algorithms for the best gaming experience. This is even more crucial on mobile devices, since they are very limited in resources and power supply. Also, you want your game to be available to as many devices as it can. To do that, you have to make sure that it gets properly adjusted to all sizes and resolutions of different screens.
8. What do you think the future of gaming will look like?
Near future will bring us huge numbers of casual games, especially on mobile platforms. As hardware develops we’ll see more and more realistic CG and AI.
9. What is your favourite game at the moment and why?
After a long and painful discussion we all agreed that it must be Mass Effect – deep storyline, very interesting game.
10. What is your advice for new developers?
Before you start to develop a game (or any other application for that matter), spend as much as you can in careful planning.Think about every step you should do, and try to predict all possible problems that might come your way during development. And, finally, remember that you can’t please everyone; there will always be someone who doesn’t like your work.
