Today, we received 10 answers of the famous 10 Playandroid questions from Gustavo Costa, the developer behind “Greed Rush” and “Turtle Slide”, two games, we will definitely review in the future.

10 Questions for Gustavo Costa

1. Please introduce yourself.

Hello everyone! My name is Gustavo Costa and I am a 21 year old Computer Games Arts student in Farnham, UK.

2. What made you want to be a game developer?

When I was a young kid my father owned an Arcade Room, soo all my life I have been surronded by games, from arcade classics like Tetris or Metal Slug, to competetive games like CounterStrike or Warcraft.



As my passion for playing games grew soo did my interest in being able to make them, and trying to make them as fun as they can get!

3. What platforms do you develop games for and why?

I develop for the Android only, and I use the not soo popular tool Processing, its uses a basic version of java, and its an amazing tool for someone with basic programming knowledge. Its a pleasure to see your game coming to life when you use a tool that is text based!

4. What are your experiences in porting games between two platforms?

All my games started with the PC version, wich is basicly a java Applet, the experience to port it to the android is a rather frustrating one, for a art student it meant having to spent countless hours researching code and finding the best ways to solve the problems i found along the way.

Memory management is hard ;)!

5. How do you get inspiration for a game?

I ‘m a flash game addict and for years now I have been searching the web looking for some of the best flash games around and they are a great source of inspiration for mobile games, since they tend to be short, fun, and easy to programme.

Of course the most popular games on mobiles also tend to inspire us and give us ideas!

6. How long does it take for you to write a game from start to finish?

I have always worked in small teams, from the games I did soo far the biggest team was made out of 3 people. I have always taken the programming role on the projects and it usually takes around 3 to 4 months from start to finish, since I am a student and I also work part time to pay the bills, the free time tends to be on short suply.

7. What are the biggest technical challenges when you develop a game?

The biggest challenge is performance, and it results from the android being deplyed on hundreds of diferent phones, all with diferent ram or processor power, soo in the end of the day , the game my run great on my test phone, and not even boot on another phone due to the amount of memory it requires.

8. What do you think the future of gaming will look like?

I think the gaming industry is shifting to apease the casual gamer, and we saw that in the last 3 years with the advent of mobile games, and free to play games. Indie developers have now the best oppurtunity ever to develop amazing games, and be able to live off them than ever before.

9. What is your favourite game at the moment and why?

I am addicted to competitive play, soo at the moment League of Legends is my choice, that is , untill DotA 2 comes out ;)!

10. What is your advice for new developers?

Dont lose your motivation, sometimes you might hear harsh critics from gamers, but in the end of the day, its hard to make a good game and above all its hard to apease to everyone, soo you need to keep on trying to improve and always try to develop something you really like!
